Mt. Kedar Dome Expedition – The one for Beginning
Mt. Kedar Dome Expedition in Uttarakhand: Gharwal region is abode to many beautiful and high peaks of Himalayas and one of the most talked-about and adored peaks is Mt Kedar Dome Peak with an altitude of 6831 m. The mountain is a part of the Gangotri group where peaks like Kedarnath, Bhagirathi I, II & III peaks, and Mt Shivling co-exist. It lies 2 km far from Kedarnath peak in the northwest direction and both the peaks surround Gangotri glacier from either of the sides. This expedition was first done by a Swiss team in 1947 and they scaled it from northwest direction. Since then, the chosen trail has become the regular one which is why it is comparatively easy to climb Mount Kedar Dome than other peaks with 6000 plus elevation. This Kedar dome expedition is for all those climbers who have never gone to such height and want to make up to something then this is the one. This expedition doesn’t require much technical skills of mountaineering as the climb is little slanting unlike in other expeditions. This is also a reason that peak is famous for ski where many people climb it and go back skiing. The trekking is usually done in the months of June, August & September but the better month for ski is February.
Kedar dome expedition- Shikhar travels team The holy Gangotri shrine is the beginning place of this beautiful trek. It is a pilgrimage town for Hindus where the holy river Ganga beings its journey. To reach here from Delhi, you can hire a taxi or buses which will first get you to Rishikesh where you can witness the famous evening Ganga aarti then next day you can continue the journey to Uttarkashi. All these journeys are quite long and will suggest you to plan halts at these places or else you’ll get tired and exhausted way before starting the actual journey. Then after Uttarkashi, the last drive will be till Gangotri as after this the whole journey will be on foot. Next day morning after breakfast we’ll high the trail and will walk to our first camping site, Bhojbasa. This mesmerizing trail goes along with river Bhagirathi and surrounded by beautiful high mountains. It seems like that river has made its way through these giant peaks. After 4-5 hrs of walking, we’ll reach our spot for overnight relaxing and stargazing. Then further next day we’ll be heading to the famous camping site, Tapovan while crossing Gaumukh, the snout of Gangotri glacier. During this route, you’ll feel the difference in altitude as the trail now starts ascending. Here you’ll be crossing the glacier then steep rocky boulders and then beautiful meadow of Tapovan. Here the spectacular view of mountains is all around you which includes Mt Shivling, Meru, Manda, and Bhagirathi peaks. Then the following day will be trek to our base camp for Kedar Dome, Kirti Glacier. It is nearly 9 kms of trekking so you can start after breakfast.
The days at base camp are reserved especially for acclimatization and for final preparation to climb the summit. You need to check all your gears and fix if anything is not right as after here there is no looking back except for rough weather. Further, the movement towards summit will start by proceeding on trail checking route, tools and weather, then coming back to base camp. After this drill for few days, then finally the day comes for the final climb. Now you’ll be ascending over some loose rock and the sad-based surface will be quite tough as you might slip but then beautiful snow beds that will take you to the summit. After reaching to summit the beautiful view of Himalayan ranges will spellbind you. The weather here is quiet unpredictable so just pray for a clear weather. Kedar dome climbing
Now, after the summit, the time calls for moving back to base camp at Kirti Glacier to relax for the night. Next few days we’ll be moving back on the same route to Tapovan, Bhojbasa, and back to Gangotri.
