Mount Nun Kun Peak in Ladakh

The twin, Nun, and Kun peaks along with Pinnacle peak are all located in the rugged and forbidding Zanskar range and are the highest in the region. The two towering peaks, along with their satellites peaks on the massif, the Barmal, White Needle and Pinnacle Peak, form a beautiful horse shoe shape above the Suru river on the border of Kashmir and Zanskar.

Mt. Nun is also the most stunning peaks of the famous Suru Valley that is adorned with a number of other spectacular peaks. One of the most inviting peaks to summit in Ladakh, J&K, the summit is surrounded by the picturesque Suru valley and the awe-inspiring Zanskar range.

About the Peak:-

Mt. Nun is the highest peak in the state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) in the Indian part of the Himalayas in the Zanskar range. A challenging summit, it is part of the twin peak mountain massif, the Nun Kun, and measures at 7,135 metres (23,409 feet). The Kun is also an above 7,000 metres peak. It measures 7,035 meters. The two peaks are separated from each-other by a high snowy plateau of four kilometres. Pinnacle peak, at 6,930 metres, is the third highest peak on the Nun Kun massif.

After many failed attempts, Mt. Nun was first successfully summitted in 1953 by a French-Swiss-Indian-Sherpa team led by Bernard Pierre and Pierre Vittoz, from the West ridge. Since then there are other routes also that have opened to the summit.

Best time to visit:-

Because of high altitude, the weather in these regions can be inclement and unpredictable. The average heights of the Zanskar range of the Great Himalayas, where these peaks are located, are about 6,000 meters. And therefore the best time to access these peaks are from the end of June and July till September.

How to reach:-

The state capital Srinagar, and Leh is best accessed by air routes from where Mt. Nun can be conveniently reached through the Kargil-Leh road that runs from about 100 kilometres east of Srinagar. The summit is located just about 250 km east of Srinagar and is about five to six-hour drive from the city. Srinagar offers good air connectivity by all the leading Indian carriers like Air India, Jet Airways, IndiGo, SpiceJet and GoAir from major metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Goa, among others.
